Since October 1, 2023 (SB 942), Florida local governments and public housing authorities can no longer regulate dogs by breed, size or weight. Miami-Dade’s long-standing pit bull ban is no longer enforceable.

No statewide rule

Florida has no statute limiting breed-based insurance decisions. Shop breed-neutral carriers for renters and liability coverage.

What it means for you: Older “Miami-Dade bans pit bulls” articles are out of date — but individual communities can still set their own rules.
